July 3 to 5, 2023

Call for papers

In Memoriam Professor Sol Neely.

Published in 1972, Humanism of the Other corresponds to the period of full maturity of Levinas' thought, after the breakthrough of Totality and Infinity. It consists in three papers: "Significance and Meaning" (1964), "Humanism and Anarchy" (1968) and "Without Identity" (1970). In it, Levinas affirms his desire to reclaim humanism, against the general trend of French philosophy, but in full knowledge of the difficulties that this would involve. He promotes a "new humanism", a new conception of culture and meaning, of time and subjectivity.

By bringing together both confirmed and young researchers around Humanism of the Other, this international conference is an invitation to meditate on his unprecedented contribution to the thinking of the human, while following some of the main threads of the text.

We propose to the contributors to place their analysis in the following lines (not only):

1) Meaning and culture: Levinas in dialogue with other approaches, traditional or contemporary.

2) The place of the book in his thought, particularly in relation to Otherwise than being or beyond essence and On God who comes to mind.

3) Levinas in debate: Heidegger (the "second Heidegger"); philosophical "post-structuralism" (especially mathematical formalism); French phenomenology (Merleau-Ponty).

4) The humanist issue, in the confrontation with figures of the French anti-humanism, whose arguments are discussed by Levinas.

5)  Levinas' anti-naturalism and his vision of the human as a stranger to being.

6) The motivations of the new humanism, especially on the allergies to the culture of the other, by soliciting the memory of this part of Europe where Kaunas is situated, where this conference will be held.

Conference languages: English and French.

Paper proposal: A title, 5 key words and an abstract (400 to 500 words bibliography included).

Thematic workshop proposal: The proposal will include either 3 or 6 papers, a title, five keywords and a general presentation (400 words maximum) of the workshop theme as well as the abstracts of each paper (about 400 words each). The complete proposal will be sent by the person in charge of the organization of the workshop.
