After I had concluded my phenomenological studies (1962), I did not dare to commit myself on the subject of the etiology of infantile autism. A survey of the abundant literature written since that date and my own experience show unfortunately that this matter still remains unsettled even to the present day. The findings made so far relating to the etiology may only be taken as indications, but not as proof.
