Texts from the body

Tracey Warr

pp. 23-37

Abstract

Bruce Gilchrist's artworks are a sustained investigation of what psychologist William James termed, as cited above, "thought not yet articulate'. Gilchrist combines poetic strategies with customised brain imaging and biofeedback technologies to draw "texts' from the mute body and to image and manifest these texts for audiences. His artworks journey in to the unconscious unlanguaged parts of consciousness, into prehension and preconsciousness.
