Abstract

The last decade witnessed a rapid growth in the number of sleep laboratories and sleep researchers. In the eighties, sleep evaluation is expected to become a routine part of patient evaluation. The abundant data collected to date will not only help physicians in their daily practice, but will also facilitate the communication between sleep researchers and a variety of other medical specialists. With additional assistance from bioengineers and computer specialists, medical experts are revealing unsolved problems in the basic mechanisms of sleep and its disorders.
