Modern concepts of disease include multi-causal etiologies. Psychological, social, and organic factors, in varying combinations and strengths, play etiologic roles in virtually all disease states. In that sense, setting aside a separate category of disease as psychophysiological or psychosomatic has become an increasingly archaic conceptualization. Psychiatric treatment approaches can play some role in most diseases. I will confine myself, however, to a brief overview of psychiatric treatment approaches to those diseases in which psychological etiologic factors are generally believed to play a major role.
