The semantic field
sparring with Lewin
pp. 403-417
Abstract
This chapter contains documents connected with Vygotsky's reception of Kurt Lewin's field theory. It is well known that the work of Lewin, together with that of Wolfgang Köhler, Kurt Koffka, Karl Bühler, and Jean Piaget, formed a major source of inspiration for Vygotsky and that he borrowed many of their ideas. Much of the empirical work of Vygotsky's group consisted of conceptual replications of the findings of these scholars. In designing these replication studies and in theoretical reflections about their results Vygotsky aimed to find the strong and weak points in the works of his colleagues. The work of Lewin became increasingly important in the early 1930s, also because of the close personal contacts between Vygotsky and Lewin and his (former) students.
