Recent work on the social history of anarchism¹ has sharpened an awareness of libertarian milieus and the linkages between the intelligentsia, bohemias and anarchism. Rather than thinking of anarchism as a fundamental critique and turning away from society, studies now note that anarchists had creative impacts back on society. In Barcelona writers and academics derived inspiration from the anarchists, and in Paris the fruitful relationship has been noted between bohemias and the popularisation of new forms of capitalist consumption.
