Heinrich Scholz' history of logic [1931d]

Hans Reichenbach

pp. 356-358

Abstract

Advocates of a philosophy based upon the exact sciences have frequently been accused of not giving the history of philosophy its full due. This accusation demonstrates a total failure to comprehend the foundations of precise philosophical thinking. For those who uphold a scientific philosophy simply claim that its future development can be brought about, not through reflection on its historical antecedents, but solely through that immersion in the subject itself that is the mark of the exact thinker. That the history of philosophy can nonetheless also be a worthy object of scientific study has never been disputed. On the contrary, we would assert that it is only upon the basis of a familiarity with philosophical issues that it becomes possible to write a history of philosophy which is not merely a colourful series of philosophical fairly tales but is able to recognise a genuine thought whenever one appears amongst the variegated panorama of opinions. Only the author with a firm grasp of philosophical problems will be in the position to compose a real history of ideas. In Heinrich Scholz" brief History of Logic, we have proof that such a novel conception of the history of philosophy can be realised. For not only has Scholz shown impressive industry in assembling an extraordinary wealth of historical information, but he has gone beyond this basic requirement to become the first to scan the history of logic using the precise knowledge of modern mathematical logic as a searchlight. Through this method the occasional instances of genuine research and genuine logical knowledge stand out clearly amidst the musty odor of old books, and for the first time we begin to get some idea of what a history of philosophy will look like once we actually have a philosophy.
