Castles on the landscape

Czech-German relations

Ronald M. Smelser

pp. 82-104

Abstract

It is my task to examine in retrospect the occasionally fruitful, often antagonistic and ultimately tragic Czech-German relationship. My main focus will be the first Czechoslovak republic, and the 70th anniversary of its founding. It will be necessary, however, initially to go back beyond the founding year of 1918, for that eventful year did not just witness some fundamental historical breaks, but was also in a number of relevant ways part of an historical continuum.
