Abstract

This chapter extends the examination of learning to become professionals begun in previous chapters, by more closely examining what is learned about practising as professionals during preparation for professional practice. More specifically, the development of professional ways of being is explored over time during the medical programme at Karolinska Institute. Formal programmes of preparation for professional practice are typically periods of substantial change towards becoming professionals. These changes not only include increasing experience of, and familiarity with, knowledge, routines and procedures relating to professional practice, but also transformation and shifting awareness of the self, as professional.
