Wittgenstein on colour and the formation of concepts

Frederik A. Gierlinger

pp. 299-316

Abstract

After 1946, during the last years of his life, Wittgenstein writes numerous remarks on the formation of concepts and on several occasions broaches the relation between our having the concepts we happen to have and the empirical facts . In light of this, his preoccupation with colours between 1949 and 1951 can be understood as an attempt to work through this difficult philosophical terrain and it will be argued in this article that the so called "Remarks on Colour" are best understood as a collection of examples that allow us to sensibly engage the question of how the empirical and the conceptual domain are related.
