A reconstruction of Russell's substitution theory

Judy Pelham

pp. 123-133

Abstract

In "Russellian Propositions' (Pelham, 1994), Alasdair Urquhart and I elaborate a theory of structured propositions that closely parallels Russell's substitution theory of 1905–08. The present paper elaborates how our reconstruction of the substitution theory models Russell's philosophical ideas about the structure of propositions as well as his axioms for substitution in writings dating from the period around December 1905.
